From Agassiz to Zamboni

Alexander Agassiz, president of the Calumet and Hecla Mining Company (1871-1910), is widely known for his innovations and leadership at the mine. The history of Calumet Township cannot be told without acknowledging his accomplishments.

Likewise, ice hockey is as synonymous with Calumet as copper mining is to the Keweenaw Peninsula. Calumet Township is home to the Calumet Colosseum (1913). The Colosseum held an NHL pre-season game between the Detroit Red Wings and St. Louis Blues on September 26, 2019 after winning the Kraft Hockeyville USA contest. The legendary ice rink is home to the Calumet Wolverines of the Great Lakes Hockey League and Calumet Copper Kings high school team.
